Inline AI
AI assistance inside the document editor — triggered by keyboard shortcut or text selection.
Inline AI brings the power of the AI directly into your documents. You can trigger it at the cursor position with a keyboard shortcut, or by selecting text to get a floating action toolbar. Everything happens in the editor — no need to switch to the chat sidebar.
Two ways to use inline AI
Cmd+I — AI at the cursor
Press Cmd+I (Mac) or Ctrl+I (Windows/Linux) anywhere in the document editor to open the inline AI prompt. A small input appears at your cursor position.
Type your instruction and press Enter. The AI generates content and inserts it at the cursor. For example:
- "Write an introduction for this section"
- "Draft acceptance criteria for the issue above"
- "Add a table comparing the three options discussed"
The generated text appears inline, ready to edit. You can accept it and keep writing, or delete it and try a different prompt.
Slash commands — AI from the slash menu
In the document editor, type / to open the slash command menu. Scroll to or search for the AI group. Available AI commands:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| AI: Continue writing | Continues the document from where your cursor is |
| AI: Summarize above | Summarizes the content above the cursor |
| AI: Write from prompt… | Opens a prompt dialog — type your instruction and the AI generates content |
| AI: Improve writing | Improves the clarity and flow of nearby text |
| AI: Translate… | Translates content — a language picker opens before it runs |
Select a command and the AI runs immediately (or opens a dialog for commands marked with "…").
Selection toolbar — AI on selected text
Select any text in the document editor. A floating toolbar appears above your selection with six AI actions:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Improve | Enhances clarity, flow, and word choice |
| Rewrite | Rewrites the selection in a different style or structure |
| Summarize | Condenses the selection into a shorter form |
| Translate | Translates the selection to another language |
| Fix grammar | Corrects grammar and punctuation errors |
| Expand | Expands the selection with more detail |
Click an action to run it. The AI processes your selected text and shows the result.
For Translate, a language picker dialog appears first — select your target language and click Translate.

Accepting or discarding results
When the AI generates a result from the selection toolbar, it appears below your selection as a suggested replacement. You have two choices:
- Accept — replaces your selected text with the AI's version
- Discard — closes the result and leaves your original text unchanged
Results from cursor-based actions (Cmd+I, slash commands) are inserted directly. If you don't want them, use Cmd+Z to undo.
Tips for inline AI
Be specific with your prompts. "Rewrite this to be more concise" works better than "make it better."
Use summarize for long sections. Select a long paragraph and hit Summarize to get a compressed version you can place in a sidebar or summary block.
Use expand for drafts. Write a one-line bullet point, select it, and click Expand to flesh it out into a full paragraph.
Continue writing works well at section breaks. Place your cursor at the end of a completed section heading or opening sentence, press Cmd+I, and use "continue" to let the AI fill in the section.
